Paylines, Ways, Clusters and Megaways: Slot Mechanics Explained With 1win Examples

Slots look alike but pay in very different ways. This guide decodes the mechanics behind the popular 1win games.

Before you choose a slot, it helps to know how it pays. The same bet behaves very differently on a three-reel fruit machine and on a tumbling cluster slot. These are the mechanics you will meet most often at 1win.

Fixed paylines

The classic. A payline is a path across the reels, and a win needs matching symbols on it. More lines mean more chances per spin, but also a higher total bet on slots where you pay per line. Simple and easy to read, which is why it suits beginners; see our beginner list.

Ways to win and Megaways

Ways slots drop the lines: matching symbols just need to be on neighbouring reels. Wild Bounty Showdown lists 3,600 ways. Megaways goes further by changing the symbol count on each reel every spin, so the number of ways varies, up to 46,656 in Temple Tumble. Expect more variance, not a better RTP.

Cluster pays and tumbles

Here symbols form touching groups. After a win, the winning symbols vanish and new ones tumble in, so one spin can chain several wins. Sugar Rush pays from clusters of five and adds multiplier spots that grow with repeated wins.

Pay anywhere

No lines and no adjacency: Sweet Bonanza 1000 pays when 8 or more matching symbols appear anywhere on the 6x5 grid, and tumbles follow. Multiplier symbols then add to the total win in free spins. Compare the three big Pragmatic Play examples in our side-by-side guide.

Hold and Win

Special coin symbols lock in place and trigger a respin round where more coins can land. Coin Strike: Hold and Win blends this with a three-reel, five-payline base game.

What mechanics do not change

MythFact
More ways means better oddsRTP and volatility decide long-run cost, not the number of ways.
Tumbles make a win likelyEach tumble is random; they extend wins, they do not guarantee them.
Hold and Win coins are "due"Every spin is independent.

FAQ

What is the difference between paylines and ways to win?

Paylines are fixed lines across the reels. Ways to win count matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, with no fixed lines.

What does pay anywhere mean?

Wins are not tied to lines: a set number of matching symbols anywhere on the grid pays, for example 8 or more in Sweet Bonanza 1000.

Are Megaways slots better?

Not by default. Megaways changes the number of ways on every spin, which makes results more varied. RTP and volatility still decide the real cost.
